IASSIST Africa Pilot Research Grant
The International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) cordially invites interested IASSIST African members to apply for the above research grant. IASSIST is an international organization that provides professional development, communication and conferences for data librarians, archivists, and social science aligned information specialists. IASSIST further supports young and mid-career professionals to recognize the value of new and innovative ideas of data in the social sciences, who may not otherwise have the funding to travel.
This research grant will facilitate 2 African IASSIST members to conduct a regional research in Data literacy, Data Science and Data management in Africa. The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate a deeper understanding of data management issues in Africa. The findings of this study will to be published in the IQ and presented at the IASSIST Annual Conference scheduled to take place in Philadelphia in from 30th May to 2nd June 2023
The research grant is supposed to cater for resources that will go into design of the studies, field data collection, data analysis experts and support during report writing.
Grant Offer
– $500
– Air ticket and registration to present at IASSIST Conference in Philadelphia in May 2023Please be aware that this funding is not intended to cover the entire cost of the research project. The applicant’s home institution may provide some level of financial support to supplement on IASSIST’s research grant. Strong preference will be given to first time applicants and applicants from those countries currently with insufficient representation at IASSIST. Only fully completed applications will be considered.
Eligibility
– Must be a paid up member of IASSIST
– Should possess a Research Concept of five pages detailing the research problem, aim, objectives, justification, methodology, budget and work plan.
– The applicant must be willing to share their data literacy experience at the IASSIST Annual Conference – The applicant must be eligible to obtain a USA visa for travel.
– The applicant must declare that she/he is able to fund all other costs beyond the grant that are involved in conducting the study, attending the Conference, e.g. all other hotel, travel and subsistence expenses NOT covered by the Grant.

What is expected from the research grant holders?
The successful candidates will be required to conduct an expedited study where they will have to test the data collection tools, collect data, analyze it, write a conference paper and present it at the IASSIST Annual Conference in Philadelphia in May 2023. Successful applicants will also be expected to be onsite at the Conference and participate actively throughout its duration, including attendance to the IASSIST business meeting. They may also be required to take part in publicity events during the conference.
After the conference, the awardees will be required to write an article on the conducted research project and publish it in the IASSIST IQ. The article must be submitted within 3 months after the end of the Annual ConferenceAll applicants will receive notification of award status no later than 1st March 2023.
