About IASSIST Africa Chapter

The IASSIST Africa Chapter is affiliated to International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) which is an international organization of professionals working with information technology and data services to support research and teaching in the social sciences and beyond. IASSIST has a membership of over 300 from Academia, Government, Non-profit sector, Private sector all over the world.

IASSIST Africa chapter was officially launched in 2021 during the Ist IASSIST Africa Regional Workshop held in Kampala, Uganda. The Africa Chapter has membership of African countries which include Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa among others. Every year, IASSIST Africa Chapter holds a regional workshop where its members in that region come together to discuss and share emerging trends and issues affecting IT, research and data services. The 3rd IASSIST Africa Regional Workshop was held in Pretoria, South Africa 18th-20th October 2023.

About University of Nairobi – Host 2024

University of Nairobi’s mandate is consistent with the provision of quality higher education, engaging in research and innovation and contributing to the development of society. Its vision is to be a globally competitive University transforming society intellectual growth, societal transformation and sustainable development.

The UoN is the oldest University in Kenya and also the largest in East and Central Africa. Originating from a humble beginning as the Royal Technical College, which was established in 1956 with only 215 students, today the UoN has an enrolment of about 50,000 students and over 276,000 alumni.

  • President of IASSIST

    Robin Rice is Data Librarian and Head, Research Data Support, in Information Services at the University of Edinburgh. She was Vice President IASSIST before she became the president.  She acts as Service Owner of the University’s Research Data Service, which provides researchers with tools and support across the data lifecycle, including Edinburgh DataShare, Finding Data (portal), and Research Data MANTRA. She is co-creator of the Research Data Management and Sharing MOOC and co-author of The Data Librarian’s Handbook (2016, Facet Publishing).

    Sandra “San” Cannon is a data management expert with more than 30 years of experience in all phases of the data life cycle. San has provided leadership in both operational and research data management issues. She teaches data and analytics at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland as well as helping organisations with data and analytics challenges through her consulting practice, Cannon Analytics, LLC. She has worked in the private sector, higher education, and the government and holds multiple degrees in economics, including a PhD from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  She is the IASSIST President Emeritus.
