The theme of this workshop is: Data Literacy as a catalyst for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data literacy refers to the ability to read, work with, analyse and manipulate data. In this workshop, data literacy is aligned to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since application and utilization of quality data significantly contributes to the attainment of the SDGs. We therefore welcome research papers, posters and related presentations focusing on the different strategies that can be applied in using data to achieve the SDGs. 

We invite data & reference librarians, social science researchers, data archivist and curator, Information and Technology professionals, researchers, practitioners, academia, students, knowledge and information managers, statisticians, digital curators, and information and communication related professionals who are interested in furthering the state of data literacy within their communities to submit short papers. We therefore anticipate that this IASSIST African regional workshop 2021 will provide an international open forum to converge, discuss, and share knowledge and experiences on the workshop theme, with an emphasis on the progress made in Africa. 

The Sub themes for the workshop papers may include:

  • Data literacy integration into development agenda
  • Approaches to data literacy education 
  • Statistical literacy
  • Data mining
  • Trans Literacy in achieving SDGs
  • Open Data and open science trends and experiences
  • Big Data
  • Research Data Management
  • Covid – 19 and its implications on data literacy

Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes. Submissions are invited on any topic within the main theme and subthemes listed above, in any one of the following formats: 

• Poster 

• Research-in-Progress 

  • Full Research Paper 

Qualifying papers shall be published electronically after a double blind peer review process. For authors who wish to publish their papers in a reputable journal, IASSIST has a journal called IASSIST IQ. Authors with papers who meet the journals’ standard are more than welcome to publish there

Deadline for submitting full papers/posters 30th June 2020 31stOctober 2020

Abstracts, papers, posters or any inquiry should be sent to program@iassistafrica.org

Format

All submissions should include the proposed title, author(s) names, contacts and institutional affiliations in New Times Roman, font size 12, 1.5 spacing on A4 portrait.

The abstract should not be no longer than 300 words and must include: the purpose of the paper; the central argument, an indication of methodology, results and/or conclusions and, implication and 3-5 keywords. 

The full papers should not be longer than 15 pages or 3000-5000 words including Title of paper, Name(s) of author(s), Institutional Affiliation, phone contact and Email address.
